Top Free Windows Utilities
Posted on Tuesday, May 11, 2004 @ 23:15:54 EDT by kguske
PC Magazine's latest edition picked the top utilities in several categories in its article on the top Windows utilities of 2004, while PC World tests security programs (firewalls, antivirus, antispyware) in its article Bigger Threats, Better Defense. Without a doubt, both are fine magazines with excellent articles to help PC users. But these magazine are for profit, thus they must earn revenue, in part from charging for subscriptions, but also from advertising. Thus, it came as no surprise that neither article says much about the multitude and excellence of free software to perform these tasks. So, for those who can't afford to support both Microsoft and it's partners (or soon to be acquisitions) too, here's a list of excellent free software to help you get more out of your PC. This "living" article will be updated constantly as new and better (and FREE) utilities become available.

The utilities listed below are those of which I am aware and, usually, have used. However, I make no claims that this list is exhaustive, and welcome suggestions and recommendations for additional software to be included here. The only criteria is that it must be free to the individual / home user.

Using the PC Magazine system of organizing utilties (I've been subscribing to this fine magazine for almost 20 years and have found no better system for comparing computer products), we'll group utilities into the following categories:
  • Firewalls
  • Antivirus
  • Antispyware
  • Antispam
  • File Compression
  • Notepad Replacements
